Frequently Asked Questions
How do I open these 7z files?
Depending on which operating system you use, there are many choices.
Windows: WinRAR, 7-zip, PeaZip
Mac OSX: The Unarchiver, 7zX, p7zip (console)
Linux: p7zip (needed for any GUI apps), File-Roller, PeaZip, Karchiver
Emulators can't read the 7z archives, so you'll have to extract which one you want to play, then load it in the emulator.
How do I play the games?
Check the Emulators section for a list of programs that will let you play them.
Why does each file have so many versions? I just want one!
7zip compression is so good, the size of all those different versions inside that one file is the same as having a single ROM packed in a regular ZIP or RAR file. So you get all the versions, for the size of one.
Is there an easy way to manage these files?
In fact, yes. If you're using Windows, Quickplay rocks. You can import all your 7z files and specify which emulator to use for them. It'll even let you pick which version of the ROM you want, without needing to extract. It'll do the work for you.
What do all these symbols and brackets mean after the filenames?
I can't get MAME to see my games!
The zips aren't supposed to be extracted. leave them compressed, and put them inside the roms folder. MAME does the extracting on its own when you pick your game.
